Eventually, roller skating evolved from just a pastime to a competitive sport, beginning with roller hockey. This sport became so popular that it even made an appearance in the Olympics in 1992. The National Sporting Goods Association Statistics found, in a 1999 study, that 2.5 million people played roller hockey. Other roller skating sports include: speed skating, figure skating, and roller derby.

Roller skating popularity exploded during the disco era but tapered off in the 80 and 90.

Some of these benefits include: Providing a complete aerobic workout; Burning 350 calories per hour while skating 6 miles per hour or 600 calories while skating 10 miles per hour. Roller skating is equivalent to jogging in terms of health benefits. The American Heart Association recommends roller skating as an aerobic fitness sport.

Roller skating has become such a popular pastime that there are even Museums dedicated to the history of roller skating. The National Museum of Roller Skating seems to be the biggest and most popular. The National Museum of Roller Skating boasts to own the largest collection of historical roller skates in the world. Along with having historical roller skates, the museum also contains pictures, medals, films, costumes, etc. that have significance. They also host a large library of roller skating books and have clips of highlights from roller skating competitions. The population is encouraged to donate anything that reflects, he history of roller skating on a local, regional, national, and international level.

Not only are there museums dedicated to roller skating, but the activity has also made it to the small screen with appearances in American entertainment. One example of this is a music video of Madonna’s featuring Madonna herself sporting some roller skates. A more recent example of this is in Jessica Simpson’s music video for her song  Public Affair The music video stars Jessica Simpson, Christina Applegate, Eva Longoria, Christina Milian, Andy Dick, and Ryan Seacrest. It shows the four women tepping out for a public affair in a roller rink. The women are shown roller skating through the entirety of the music video.

I watched on the news about Natasha Richardson’s fatal death from a skiing accident. She was a 45 year old mother of two. She fell while skiing and knocked her head. The point is she got up feeling fine. However that not so important knock caused a bleed which within hours left the poor lady brain dead.

I didn’t know who she was but the details to what caused her death got me really thinking.

When riding a bike we are told to wear head gear meaning a helmet. If you are roller skating you are advised to wear knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet. However when I’ve seen skiing on television whether it’s competition level or for pleasure, especially in films, I see the skiers wear protective clothing, special goggles but no helmets, just woolly hats.

Now if you are going down a slope at a certain speed wouldn’t you wear protective head gear? Hopefully the organisations that run the ski slopes or the businesses that provide the protective clothing will now adhere to advising the public and skiers about wearing protective head gear.

I remember when I brought my laptop, soon after the purchase I went out and also brought a laptop bag. Why? Because I had spent a great deal of money getting the laptop and I couldn’t afford getting it damaged. Isn’t this the way we should think about our own head, our own brain. I find it fascinating that we take so much for granted until it’s to late.

I hope this shocking incident that happened to Natasha Richardson open peoples eyes towards how we protect ourselves. A broken laptop could be claimed back via the insurance policy, you then can replace the laptop. We can’t get a new brain and even if surgery is involved your brain may not be the same again. Are you prepared to take the risk with something so special and unique to you? Protect your brain while you have the choice to, wear a helmet.

Roller skating is a good recreational endeavor. While it is a fun activity for families, there are also roller skating competitions that may put you are risk of injuries. The boot

Brakes or stops

This is the part of a skate that is important to avoid accidents for beginners. Breaks or stops may be used under the heel or under the toe. This will ensure that young or beginning skaters will not hit the wall or lamppost when they skate.

However, for competitive skaters, the need for breaks may not be necessary because it may cause then to trip as they do the tricks.

In 1937 a group of roller-rink operators determined to band together and make a serious attempt to elevate the sport’s standards and management. Several amateur competitions were fostered. On April 3, 1937, seventeen operators met at Detroit and organized the Roller Skating Rink Operators Association (RSROA) of the United States. It set up as its main objective the advancement of amateur roller skating.

Perry Rawson, a retired New York broker and amateur ice skater, who had thoroughly studied International Style figure and dance skating, visited England in 1937 and saw for himself what had been accomplished on rollers in that country. When he returned to America, Rawson brought back motion picture films showing that the International Style, which was prevalent on ice, was possible on rollers. The films showed British champions doing school figures, free style, and dancing on roller skates.

The exhibition of these films in many rinks throughout the United States aroused great enthusiasm. In October of 1938, James and Joan Lindstone, the British champions, came to the United States and toured the country, giving exhibitions at many of the leading rinks. Their spellbinding act greatly impressed American skaters, and from that point the International Style came into its own in the United States.

The first national meet to be sanctioned by the RSROA was the speed-skating championships held at the Sefferino Rollerdrome at Cincinnati in 1938. In the following year, the RSROA held its first national figure- and dance-skating championships, the figure-skating events being held at the Arena Gardens Rink in Detroit, and the skate-dancing competitions at the Mineola Skating Rink, Mineola, N.Y.

In 1940, figure-, dance-, and speed-skating championships were combined, and an all-inclusive national championship meet was held at the Cleveland Public Auditorium. The four-day meet catered to almost five hundred amateur skaters participating in all the classes of the three branches of the sport.

The meet was so successful that the membership of the RSROA decided to hold the National Championships at the same auditorium in 1941, when for four days, once again, the big auditorium was filled with amateur skaters. There were many more competitors than in the previous year, and ages ranged from six to thirty-six, all competing in dancing, figures, and racing for national titles.

At this time the RSROA founded an annual professional school where the country’s leading instructors could get together in a group, exchange information, and agree on the standardization of skating and teaching procedure. It established rules and regulations for the game of roller hockey and for the organization of amateur roller hockey teams and leagues. It arranged a series of graded proficiency tests for dance, figure and speed skating, for which bronze, silver, and gold medals were awarded.

Meanwhile, roller skating had been publicized in three motion picture short subjects, had been included in two feature films, and had been the subject of many magazine articles and at least one full-length novel. Books were published, containing the various rules, regulations, tests, and amateur competitions for all branches of the sport. The first regularly scheduled newspaper column devoted exclusively to roller skating started in the New York Journal-American in 1940. The RSROA was very effective at getting the general public to accept and get excited about roller skating.
