Roller skating is popular among young people. It is interesting and amusing. It is originated from skating. Compared to skating, it is more exciting, adventurous and fashionable. Actions of roller skating is similar to skating. Their fields and equipments are different. Nowadays, roller skating is loved by young people. We can often see young boys and girls on roller skates passing by on the streets.
Origin of roller skating
Early in BC 1100, hunters wore bone skates to hunt in winter. Dutchman, a Scot, created the first pair of skates in BC 1700. He hoped to imitate ice skating in summer. So he tied wood sticks to his shoes. He established the first roller skating club in Edinburgh that year.
Types of roller skating
Roller skating is a leisure sport, as well as a competitive sport. There are many roller skating competitions now. Roller skating also appears in the Olympic Games. There are 3 types of roller skating.
1. Speed roller skating
Single-row roller skates and two-row roller skates are competition tools. The competition can be held on fields or roads. There are 1000-meter roller skating for men, 5000-meter roller skating for men, 10000-meter roller skating for men, 20000-meter roller skating for men, 500-meter roller skating for women, 3000-meter roller skating for women and 5000-meter roller skating for women in World Field Roller Skating Championship.
2. Roller Figure Skating
There are roller skating of prescribed movements, free roller skating, pairs roller skating and pairs dance. Competition is held on the field longer than 50 meter and wider than 25 meter. Three people of each team can take part in one game. The referee marks according to easiness of actions and beauty of dance.
3. Roller skating ball
It looks like the combination of ice hockey and hockey. There are 5 people in each team.
4. Maximal exercise
There is breathtaking and complicated technique performance on skateboard. It is one of the most exciting games in roller skating.
5. Leisure roller skating
Roller-skating freely on different kinds of fields to do exercise and enjoy oneself. The main activity is Street Skates. Move slowly, watch the scenes on the street, enjoy the fresh air and relax yourself in the sunshine.
6. Freestyle
The specialist is Salomon. It is different from figure roller skating. Double-row roller skates are used.

A pair of good roller skates should be firm. Sponge should be thick enough. Toughness of chassis determines the life span of roller skates. A-alloy chassis is good but expensive. Don’t wear roller skates much bigger than your feet. It is not safe. Beginners can wear unprofessional roller skates. However, when you begin to learn limited actions, you should wear professional roller skates. Common roller skates can’t stand those difficult actions.
Protectors
Protectors are easy to be ignored, but they are important. Protectors include headpiece, elbow guard, cuff and knee pad.
